Hunting the Rut

Many have different opinions on moon phases hunting but I use it each year and have great success. Weather, temps, and deer numbers also have a key aspect to the rut but moon phases generally have a great link to when it will be on.
Look on the calendar and find when fall begins, fall equinox. find the 2nd full moon on calendar after the fall equinox and go back 4-5 days. This will generally show the heat of the rut. Now this can be different in every state in the US. It could vary due to the weather like I mentioned before. I have 12 different Pope and Young harvests that I have used this Moon Phase hunting. I hunt generally in MN and WI so this works great for my hunts. Remember to always be safe and hunt hard....

  1. Hey Rhino! Yeah moon phases helped me a ton this year. One thing this year that helped my rut hunting was an issue of Field and Stream magazine right before the start of the rut. The one article in there told about the best days to kill a mature buck as well as having one day as the best. This helped me a ton every time they had a day on there I was in the woods and seen great shooter bucks and awesome rut activity. The best day this year was November 11. This was my birthday! plus veterens day which meens no school! so I sat all day and seen 8 great bucks all in rut mode and I ended up harvesting a 4 and a half year old buck weighing around 230lbs which came straight to the call at 8 yards. So next year look for this article. It helped me a ton and should help everyone as well!

  4. Hey Rhino-

Great info, man. I started dabbling with hunting moonphases back in '98 and every year I go online to get the moon rise/set times for my area, then coordinate them to the rut predictions as guidelined by D&DH according to equinox. It's fun and I even backtracked years previous to see if moon phase had anything to do with kills in the 80's. Pretty cool if you add in barometric pressures, incoming fronts, etc. Look forward to seeing more posts!
